The monitoring and gear selection method uses a data processor (3) receiving signals from a gear switching control and from sensors incorporated in the automatic transmission and/or the automobile, providing data which is compared with reference data for identifying safety critical conditions in a first program plane (4) and providing a sensor signal plausibility check in a second program plane (5). A third independent program plane (6) processes the signals from the second program plane and provides a parity check before operation of the gear selection actuators. An Independent claim for a device for monitoring and gear selection for an electronic-hydraulic automatic transmission is also included.
