The inventive passive-matrix liquid-crystal screen relates to the image reproduction engineering. The invention improves contrast and timing characteristics of a screen and the viewing angle thereof. The novelty of said screen lies in that a liquid layer (1) is embodied in such a way that it is possible to ensure a self-compensating configuration and dispose optical axes of polaroid films along bisectors of an angle between orientation vectors of near-surface molecules, thereby providing the screen elements with properties of an optical energetically independent memory. The novelty of the invention lies also in that the inventive method for the screen control consists in using enough short pulses of a control voltage in such a way that it activates inertial properties of liquid-crystal molecules in order to select switched in elements.
