PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a substrate for a magnetic recording medium which can be further thinned, is excellent in shelf stability and is suitable for the digital recording by a helical scanning method of especially a DVCPRO system or the like and by which high density digital recording signal can be satisfactorily reproduced even under a high temperature and high humidity condition. SOLUTION: In the substrate for the magnetic recording medium, wherein a non-magnetic film consisting of a non-magnetic metal and /or a metal oxide is provided on at least one side surface B of a polyester film, the substrate has >=7,500 MPa Young's moduli in both the longitudinal and the lateral directions and -10×10<-6> to 10×10<-6> /%RH coefficients of expansion by humidity in both the longitudinal and the lateral directions and the surface opposite side to the surface B side is the surface for forming a magnetic layer.
