PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the picture quality from being deteriorated in case of displaying a moving picture. SOLUTION: White light made to exist from a lamp 100 is reflected and separated by a total reflection mirror 110 and color separating dichroic mirrors 111, 112, 113 and modulated by each liquid crystal panel P, and then it is projected onto a screen 101 as a still color picture. The moving picture can be displayed by switching this still picture in a short time. Here, at the position shown by the reference numeral 102, a rotary shading shutter is placed for cutting off/transmitting the light at a regular cycle, to temporarily cut off the light in synchronization with the timing of switching the color still picture. Thus, the moving picture has improved sharpness and the picture quality is prevented from being deteriorated.
