PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display apparatus for improving visibility and portable electronic appliances thereby are provided to increase luminosity in observing near the normal line to the display surface by setting the peak of reflected rays within the range of 20 angular degrees. CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal display device includes a reflector. Substrates(10,20) are faced to each other, and electrodes and alignment film are installed in the substrate. A reflector is installed between the substrate and the electrode, and a phase difference plate(27) and a polarizing plate(28) are arranged in the substrate. When an angle between a direction of a normal line with respect to a display surface of the liquid crystal display device and a main viewing direction is from 0 to 20 degrees, a reflection ratio peak value of light incident upon the liquid crystal display device and reflected by the reflector is set so as to occur within a range of 20 degrees from the normal line direction.
