A method for continuously processing an elongated food material such as a "rope" of dough comprises continuously feeding the material to means defining a generally helical path at one end of the path, continuously moving the material along the path, and continuously discharging the treated material at the other end of the path. The treatment may for example be tempering. In one embodiment the "rope" is coiled about a horizontal reel made of spaced bars, with suitable guide and feed members. In another embodiment, the "rope" is held in position in the path by means of driven guide wheels, the axis of the helix being vertical.
