Glass sheets 1, 2 are united in face-to-face relationship by a band 5 of solder sandwiched between metallized coatings 4, 41 on continuous marginal portions of the glass sheets. Preferably the coatings 4, 41 are of copper or copper based alloy and a tin-based solder 5 is used. Plates 10 of lead or lead alloy may be used as spacer members and are incorporated into the structure. A surface coating 8 on one of the sheets 1 may modify the optical or conductive properties of the structure and a lead-in wire, with an insulating sheath and metallized coatings thereover, may be incorporated in the sealed edge and connected to the coating 8. The solder 5 may be introduced as molten solder by melting a rod or solidified solder or one sheet may be melted in situ.
