Torque measuring apparatus comprises a sleeve 7 and hollow piston 6 coupling input and output driveshafts 23, 24, a rotary enclosed chamber 14 formed by the sleeve 7 and end-walls of the shaft 23 and piston 6 and a compressible or displaceable fluid in the rotary chamber 14 wherein the sleeve 7 and piston 6 are so connected that their relative displacement compresses or displaces the fluid in proportion to the torque transmitted between the shafts 23, 24 and a gauge 22 responsive to the compression or displacement of the medium gives an indication of the applied torque. The sleeve 7 drives the piston 6 by inwardly directed pins 11 engaging (preferably by means of rollers 46) helical slots 8 in the skirt of the piston which in turn rotates the shaft 24 whilst being free to slide axially thereon through ball races in key ways. The sleeve 7 may be driven by the shaft 23 by a similar pin and slot connection with a piston (5) keyed to the shaft 23, Figs. 2, 3, 4 (not shown) or the sleeve 7 may be shrunk on to a spigot 52 of a head 51 carried by the shaft 23. The fluid may be either a liquid or air communicating through co-planar peripheral holes 15 with a sealed stationary chamber and pressure gauge 22. This chamber may be an annular channel (17) inside a collar (16), Fig.2 (not shown), or an oil bath inside a casing 31, provided with seals, air vent 43 and filling plugs. |
