The cylinder consists basically of a tube (1) of non-circular internal cross section, in which a piston element (2) linked co-axially to a piston rod (3) is sealed. The piston element has a circular cross section and is surrounded by a connected adapter element (4) which can turn relative to it, with an internal surface corresponding to that of the piston, and an external surface (5) corresponding to that of the cylinder.
