A method for degasifying aqueous suspensions of cellulosic fibres comprises continuously supplying the suspension via pipe 16 to a degasifying chamber 5 and distributing it as a flowing continuous film over the internal surface of chamber 5, maintaining within the chamber by means of a vacuum pump connected to outlet 25 a vacuum sufficient to cause boiling of the suspension at its existing temperature e.g. 100-140‹F which vapourises a portion of the water and releases gases from the suspension, condensing at least some of the water vapour by contact with skirt 30 sprayed with cooling liquid from annular shower head 35, removing condensate via outlet 28, removmg released gases via outlet 25 and separately removing the degasified suspension via outlet 13. Flexible diaphragm 18 can be moved up or down by introducing or moving water via pipe 21 from chamber 20 to adjust the circumferential outlet slot 19 at the top of pipe 16. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown) an adjustable venturi is situated at the top of pipe 16.</p> |
