The monomer of the present invention is represented by the following Formula 1: <CHEM> wherein X is a vinyl-polymerizable group; R<1> and R<2> may be the same or different and are each an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and R<3> is metyl or hydrogen, m is an integer of 1 to 3; with the proviso that two or three R<3> groups when m is 2 or 3 are the same or different from each other. The monomer is structurally characterized by the presence of a tertiary hydroxyl group and a vinyl-polymerizable group X and the absence of an ester linkage derived from a tertiary hydroxyl group. Polymers produced by the polymerization of the monomer and an optional comonomer have a moderated reactivity and hydrophilicity. <IMAGE>
