PURPOSE: A cooling system for an engine is provided to improve cooling and fuel efficiency and reduce the generation of cavitation. CONSTITUTION: A cooling system for an engine comprises a water pump(25) supplying a coolant cooled in a radiator(26) to a cylinder block(21) or cylinder head(22), a thermostat(31) controlling to make the coolant, circulating after cooling the cylinder block or cylinder head, flow to a coolant passage(41) connected to the radiator or bypass passage(42) according to the engine condition, a shutoff valve(35) of which one end is coupled with a plunger of the thermostat to be communicated each other and the other end is elastically supported at a side wall of the cylinder head by a spring to control the coolant discharged through the coolant outlet of the cylinder block, and a valve housing(30) covering the thermostat and a valve and formed at a side of the cylinder head.
