A non-reactive gas is passed along a smelt transport path along a conduit so that it flows around the smelt. Transporting a metal smelt through a conduit comprises supplying the smelt to the conduit inlet, generating a flow of smelt between the conduit inlet and outlet and removing the smelt from the conduit outlet. A gas which does not react with the smelt is supplied to the conduit and made to flow along the smelt transport path so that it flows around the smelt, causing the interaction between the smelt and inside walls of the conduit to vary, reducing sluggish flow of the smelt. |
