Compounds of the structure:wherein R1 is H, a C1 to C4 alkyl, or a substituted C1 to C4 alkyl; R2 is H or a cyanoethyl; n is an integer of 1 to 4, and y is 1 or 2, and a method for making the compounds. The compounds are made by reacting acrylonitrile with one or more cycloaliphatic vicinal diamines in the presence of water and a catalytic amount of an acid catalyst having a pKa of -3.0 to 7.5.
