PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for arc welding of an aluminum-based member by which the welding quality is improved by varying such a welding condition as a polarity ratio at real time according to the magnitude of a gap which varies along a weld line. SOLUTION: A welding is performed by alternately changing the polarity of welding voltage applied between members 1 and 2 composed of an aluminum- based material and a consumable electrode 4 into a reverse polarity and a straight polarity. In this case, the advance region of a weld position in the advancing direction of welding is detected by the use of a detecting means 5, and thus the gap G amount of a gap G existing in the region is detected, and a control is so performed that the polarity ratioγ, which is a ratio at which the straight polarity is given, is set at a value larger when the gap G amount is large than a value set at the time when the gap G amount is small.
