PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To transfer a card-shaped recording medium for enabling accurate recording while satisfying both the accuracy and the efficiency when recording is carried out on the recording medium by a recording part with a thermal head. SOLUTION: There are provided a transfer motor 70 by a stepping motor for driving transfer rollers 61 and 62 which transfer the card-shaped recording medium C to the thermal head recording part 9, and a recording medium detection sensor 74 arranged in a transfer path. In controlling driving the stepping motor, the control accuracy can be switched to a plurality of stages by switching a phase excitation of an energization system and a monitoring interruption frequency. At a thermal transfer printing time, the stepping motor drives with a finest control accuracy when the medium is transferred to a reference position detected by the detection sensor 74, and drives with a control accuracy corresponding to a resolution of printing images when the medium is transferred to a printing start position and when the medium is transferred during printing. The stepping motor drives with a rough control accuracy when the medium is carried in and out. A recording process is carried out by switching the driving with the finest control accuracy and the driving with the control accuracy corresponding to the resolution of printing images by a plurality of the number of times.
