PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner for a vehicle which can eliminate shortage of a refrigerating machine oil during the operation, and improve the reliability when the heating operational is re-started. SOLUTION: When the air conditioner 3 in which a carbon dioxide refrigerant from a refrigerant compressor 10 flows in a reversible manner to a refrigeration cycle comprising a heat exchanger 7 on the service side, a pressure reducing device 8, and a heat exchanger 5 on the heat source side via a four-way valve 13 to perform the heat pump operation is mounted in an engine room 2 in the forward part of a vehicle body, the refrigerant compressor is installed lower than the heat exchangers on the service side and the heat source side which work as an evaporator and a radiator respectively during the heating operation. The refrigerating machine oil stored in the refrigeration cycle of the two heat exchangers is returned to the refrigerant compressor by the gravity, and the refrigerating machine oil ( a lubricating oil) is sufficient at the re-start, and thus, the reliability of the compressor is not degraded.
