Elongated blanks are fed axially between at least two profiled rolls 1 and 2, at least one of the rolls being vibrated during rolling. Each roll has a profile which extends helically along the roll, the profile being shaped to progressively form a desired profile on a blank. The rolls are skewed to feed the blank axially, and guides prevent lateral movement of the blank. Fig. 1 indicates how bolts 6 with threaded portions 6a are progressively formed. The rolls are driven through gearing from a motor 10, the roll 2 being laterally adjustable by an hydraulically operated carriage 15. A vibrator 25 for the roll 1 preferably provides a frequency of greater than 50 cycles/sec. and an amplitude of up to 2 mm.
