1,171,854. Purifying phenol. SOC. ITALIANA RESINE S.p.A. 23 March, 1967 [24 March, 1966], No. 13865/67. Heading C2C. Phenol, obtained by acid-catalysed decomposition of cumene hydroperoxide and subsequent rectification from at least part of the decomposition products, is purified by heating under pressure in presence of water and a silica-alumina catalyst, cooling, adding a further quantity of water and a mixture of the higher boiling fractions from the rectification to cause seperation into an upper aqueous phenolic layer and a lower layer containing high boiling products, and recovering purified phenol from the aqueous layer; preferably, after the step of heating with water and catalyst, the mixture is extracted with water in presence of pitch (palphacumylphenol + dimethylphenylcarbinol + acetophenol) at 80-90‹ C., the said upper layer is cooled to 50-60‹ C. to give further upper and lower layers of which phenol is recovered from the further lower layer, and the further upper layer is recycled to the extraction process.
