PURPOSE: A method for forming a beam by using an adaptive antenna array is provided to improve capacity and quality of communication in a WCDMA base station by improving a beamforming module structure. CONSTITUTION: A microwave signal received through an antenna array(401) is converted to a digital signal of a baseband by a frequency down converter(402) and an A/D converter(403). The converted digital signal is inputted into a smart modem structure. The smart modem structure is formed with an inverse diffusion portion(404), a beam forming portion(405), a plurality of sum portions(406,407), and an SIR estimator(408). The inverse diffusion portion(404) is formed with a DPCCH(Dedicated Physical Control CHannel) inverse diffuser and a DPDCH(Dedicated Physical Data CHannel) inverse diffuser, and a channel information estimator in order to an inverse diffusion process. The beam forming portion(405) performs beamforming operations of a data channel and a pilot channel of a symbol level and outputs beamformed signals of the symbol level. The sum portions(406,407) sum up outputs of each finger for pilot channels and data channels. The SIR estimator(408) estimates an SIR for TPC(Transmit Power Control) from the sum of the finger outputs for the pilot channels.
