Twin-frame sintered nickel-iron electrode is used as negative plate. It can be combined with various known types of positive plate. The design is based on the DSK catalysing electrode, of Raney nickel alloy, which is said to yield enhanced specific capacity. This being attributed to the complete oxidation of nickel to the hydroxide during discharge by electrochemical effects. It has however been established that the subsequent reduction of the hydroxide proceeds with difficulty, if aging has taken place, unless high temperatures are employed. Easier reduction at ambient temperature, and thus further increases in specific capacity and power to weight ratio is effected by alloying the Raney nickel with 2 to 30% by weight of iron, which inhibits recrystallisation and consequent aging of the hydroxide. Typical electrodes showed specific capacities 1.7 time greater than those based on pure Raney nickel. The fabrication of the modified DSK electrodes, according to prior processes, is described. |
