PURPOSE: A multistep expansion air bag is provided to protect a passenger by expanding a central portion of the air bag after expanding both sides firstly for a vehicle. CONSTITUTION: An air bag is composed of an inflator(20) and a cushion. The inflator receives a signal from a controller for sensing and discriminating an impact applied to the vehicle, and spouts gas of a high pressure/high speed. The cushion is expanded by the gas spouted through a plurality of exhaust ports formed along a side of the inflator, and comprises a lower cushion(30) and an upper cushion(40). The lower cushion is fixed at the inflator and expanded into both sides. The upper cushion is coupled at the lower cushion by sewing, and gas is introduced into the upper cushion after filling the lower cushion firstly.
