PURPOSE: A spherical carbon having particle size of several to tens of microns, a large apparent density and a small specific surface area which can be used as an anode active material for lithium secondary batteries is provided, and a method for preparing the spherical carbon is provided. CONSTITUTION: The method for preparing spherical carbon comprises the step of heat treating a mixture of carbon precursor and dispersive medium, wherein the carbon precursor is selected from resin, pitch and a mixture thereof, the resin is one or more resins selected from the group consisting of thermosetting synthetic resin comprising phenol resin, furan resin, epoxy resin, polyacrylonitrile resin, polyimide resin, polybenzimidazole resin, polyphenylene resin and bisphenol resin, divinylbenzene styrene copolymer, and cellulose, the pitch is petroleum based pitch or coal based pitch, the dispersive medium is hydrophobic inorganic material, or silicon oil, the hydrophobic inorganic material is silica, zeolite, alumina, titania, or ceria the surface of which is hydrophobic treated. The method for preparing spherical non-graphitizable carbons comprises step a) of carbonizing the mixture by heat treating a mixture containing carbon precursor, and disperse medium of hydrophobic inorganic material to a temperature of 700 to 1500 deg.C in an inert gas atmosphere; and step b) of removing inorganic material by adding acid or alkali solvent to carbides of the step a). The method for preparing spherical graphitized mesocarbon microbeads comprises step a) of heat treating a mixture of carbon precursor and disperse medium; and step b) of heat treating the heat treated spherical carbon precursor or spherical carbon to a temperature of 2000 to 3200 deg.C. The spherical non-graphitizable carbons comprise 10 wt.% of spherical particles satisfying the following mathematical expression 1:£Mathematical Expression 1| 0.99<=a/b<=1, where a is short diameter of particle, and b is long diameter of the particle. |
