PURPOSE: Provided is a novel 5-O-butyl-3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid used as an intermediate for producing 3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid or quinic acid or as an agent for protecting functions of the liver. CONSTITUTION: The 5-O-butyl-3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid(formula 1) is produced by a process comprising the steps of: extracting Ligularia fischeri var. spiciformis by methanol; emulsifying or dissolving the methanol extract in water; extracting the emulsified or dissolved resultant by diethylether; extracting the remaining aqueous layer by ethylacetate; and performing a silicagel column chromatography of the ethylacetate extract.
