PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce power consumption of a data side for supplying data signal to data electrodes by suppressing charge and discharge currents to a capacitance component of the data electrodes. SOLUTION: In the method for driving the AC-type plasma display disclosed herewith, for example, 8×8 (=64) pieces of discharge cells 5 are arranged in a matrix form; one screen composed of these 64 pieces of discharge cells 5 is split into 16 groups 6a-6p by grouping each 4 pieces as one group; the number of gradations is set to 16; one field display period F is composed of 4 pieces of sub-fields SF1-SF4; and then when each cell is selected to be displayed or not displayed in a scanning period, and when differences in brightness within a group are at a certain level or lower, a data pulse at the time of write-discharging a group with all the brightness levels in this group regarded as the same is varied only when the first and last write-discharges are performed in the group.
