PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of a disturbance in a reproduced image due to thinning of a track width at a connection recording in a magnetic recording and reproducing device for performing recording and reproducing in both an SP mode for normal recording and an LP mode for long-term recording with a common head. SOLUTION: An envelope signal level detection circuit 2 detects the signal level of a reproduction envelope outputted from a head amplifier 1 and stores the signal level in a memory 4. A computing element 5 performs tracking control in short playing when the connection recording is performed by performing comparison operation of the signal levels of respective tracks. Track shifting to reduce protruded quantity of the head with respect to the last track of a recorded area is performed at this stage.
