PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable an image processor that reads a manuscript at a set variable power by skimming through the manuscript to save the capacity of a buffer memory which stores read image data by reading the manuscript correspondingly to the set variable power even when the power is too high for the capacity of the buffer memory due to the size of the manuscript. SOLUTION: When the image processor simultaneously reads both surfaces of the manuscript by skimming through the manuscript, the processor determines whether or not all image data read from the manuscript by one-time reading operation can be stored in the buffer memory from the size of the manuscript, set variable power, and capacity of the memory (S11). When the determined result is 'No', the processor reads the manuscript by skimming through the manuscript by setting the manuscript transporting speed to the speed corresponding to 100% magnification and stores read image data in the buffer (S14). Then the processor digitally changes the magnification of the image data so that the data may correspond to the set variable power (S15).
