摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device in which the brightness of a light source is dynamically light controlled in accordance with input video signals using the vicinity of the characteristics range where the light emitting efficiency of the light source is made maximum. SOLUTION: A feature detecting section 1 detects an average luminance level (APL) of input video signals. A light controlling section 2 obtains light control data to be used to control a light source 7 based on the difference between a beforehand set reference luminance level and the APL. A light control signal computing section 3 receives the light control data outputted by the section 2, generates new dimming data to control the value of a lamp tube current i of the source 7 for the components, that vary within a beforehand set interval, based on the reference light control data which give a lamp tube current i0 so that the light emitting efficiency of the source 7 is made maximum and outputs the data. A light source control section 5 dynamically conducts the control of the brightness of the source 7 based on the new light control data by controlling the value of the current i of the source 7.
