Process (M1) for evaluating sensitivity of an organism and/or tissue to cancer by determining expression levels of at least part of the aldehyde dehydrogenase-6 (ADH6) gene. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) Kit for the process; In vitro diagnosis of cancer using M1; (2) Purified polynucleotide (I), derived from chromosome 15q26, including a mutation that comprises addition of an expressed sequence tag (EST; all or part of sequences of 412 and 2504 bp, reproduced) to the wild-type gene; (3) Recombinant vector containing all or part of (I); (4) Recombinant polypeptide (II) encoded by (I); (5) Recombinant host cell containing (I), (II) or the vector of (4); in vitro diagnosis (M2) of prostatic cancer by detecting (II); and (6) Kit for M2.
