A housing 4 is implanted into the body or body tissue and contains a medicament 6 to be dispensed. Vibration of the membrane 7 by ultrasonic waves from the source 10 outside the body serves to pump the medicament selectively through the medicament port 9 into the body tissue. The medicament is introduced into the housing via the port 9. A sensor 11 detects a parameter of the tissue indicative of the operation of the medicament to control the time period over which the source 10 is energized and the medicament subsequently dispensed.
