The sliding and locking system for a smooth headrest rod (2) sliding in a sheath (10) comprises a diaphragm (3) comprising an orifice which receives the rod. The diaphragm is activated in a reversible manner by displacing the rod in one direction or another from its open position, where the rod slides freely, to its closed position where the rod is locked in translation. An unlocking device (18) can selectively move the diaphragm into one of the two positions.
