The traffic light is shaped as an hour-glass (5), giving waiting traffic participants an optical indication of the duration of a specific phase or waiting time. The light-emitting uppermost compartment (3) in a specific time gradually fades, whilst the lowermost compartment in corresponding manner gradually illuminates. On a supporting background in the uppermost compartment, a considerable number of light-emitting diodes are fitted systematically in horizontal rows in an inverted triangular row arrangement corresponding to the uppermost compartment of the hour-glass. Likewise in the lowermost compartment a considerable number of light-emitting diodes are fitted systematically in horizontal rows in a trapezium-shaped row arrangement. At the beginning of the waiting period in the uppermost compartment all the diodes illuminate. At the elapse of the waiting period, the optical impression of an hour-glass running from top to bottom is provided.
