An "upside down umbrella" type helicopter rescue pod includes a foldable frame with telescopic tubes 2, 3, arms 4 and struts 6a, 6b that support a web 23, 25 between the arms 4 when the pod is deployed. The pod is suspended by the eye 21 at the bottom of the cable from the helicopter. The folded pod is ejected from the helicopter and free falls with the attached cable until the cable is braked to pull the pod up short, the shock causing a spring latch to disengage the telescoped tubes to allow the pod to open at the end of the cable drop. Personnel and equipment can be quickly loaded into the opened pod and lifted away.
