The headlamp unit has a light source, e.g. a discharge lamp (22), arranged on an optical axis extending in the automobile longitudinal direction, a rear reflector (24), a front projection lens (28) and a light screen between the rear reflector and the projection lens, for screening part of the light reflected forwards by the reflector. A pair of auxiliary reflectors (36,44) lie above and below the optical axis respectively, for reflecting light from the light source downwards and forwards.
