Prevention of fraud and proving the veracity of works of art, especially paintings on canvas by radiographing an area of the canvas and retaining the radiograph as a reference for future disputes

Method for verifying the authenticity of an object such as a painting, made on canvas. Accordingly a radiograph of an area of the original painting is made. Optionally an identifying photograph of the area can be taken and identifying characters included in the radiograph. As the canvas and paint are opaque to X- rays the resultant image will depend on the amount of radiation absorbed by the paint. The veracity of a painting can be checked by radiographing the reference area and comparing it to the reference radiograph stored for the original.
