PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide hexagonal ferrite magnetic powder which is easily dispersed and has a high degree of dispersion and a coating-type magnetic recording medium which contains the above magnetic powder and is superior both in traveling durability and in electromagnetic conversion characteristics. SOLUTION: This hexagonal ferrite magnetic powder is coated with a compound which contains rare earth elements including Y and/or an actinoid compound and is 10 to 50 nm in average tabular diameter and has an average tabular ratio of 2 to 5 and a variation coefficient of tabular diameter of 30% or below. A magnetic recording medium is composed of a support material and a magnetic layer formed on it, and magnetic layer contains the above hexagonal ferrite magnetic powder. |
