A method of predicting the relative prospects of a particular outcome of a cancer in a human patient comprising the steps of (i) obtaining a sample containing a cell from the patient; (ii) exposing the cell to an electric field; and (iii) determining whether the cell displays a response associated with cancer. Cancerous or highly metastatic cells may exhibit galvanotaxis, ie directional movement in the presence of an electric field, whereas non-cancerous or lowly metastatic cells may exhibit no or weaker galvanotaxis. The cancer is preferably prostate or breast cancer.
