A vacuum chamber (2) is open on one side, which is then closed by placing the components (8, 9) to be welded in position. The vacuum produced by a pump (4) provides the force holding the components together and, after welding, is also used to test the leak-tightness of the weld by measuring the pressure rise in the chamber with a sensor (5). The vacuum chamber (2) can be smaller than the components (8, 9) to be held, with the components resting on an interior seal (3). Alternatively, for differently shaped components, the chamber can be larger with a circumferential sealing ring.
