A scrubber column (1) contains a jet pump (7) operated with wash fluid. Gas flow through the jet pump is in series with gas flow through the absorption column (10). The jet pump reduces the pressure in the gas stream. An Independent claim is included for the corresponding method of gas scrubbing. Preferred Features: The jet pump is located ahead of the absorption column with respect to gas flow. Gas and wash fluid flows at the output of the jet pump are co-current; in the absorption column they are countercurrent. A guide tube (6) for the gas/liquid mixture leaving the jet pump is surrounded by and concentric with the absorption column. The guide tube itself, comprises two concentric cylinders, between which wash fluid is supplied for the pump. Guide tube side outlets supply wash fluid to sprayer nozzles (11) of the absorption column. Gas inlet (4) and gas outlet (5) are at the same end of the guide tube. The gas flow is turned through about 180 deg at the end of the guide tube remote from the jet pump, where a chamber (15) collects impurity-loaded wash fluid. At this end also, baffles (14) increase dust separation. The absorption column contains and comprises a series of baskets (10) holding column packing, in the gas flow. Pressure reduction by the jet pump, compensates gas pressure losses in the absorption column. These are of the order of 20-40 mbar, preferably less than 20 mbar. The jet pump is operated with a wash fluid pressure of 4-5 mbar. Quantity of wash fluid passed through the jet pump corresponds with the desired pressure reduction in the gas flow. Fluid volumetric flow rate to the pump is about twice that passed through the column.
