Production of colored structures of glass comprises: locally heating undoped glass using a laser beam through a solution or a gel of a metal salt; and contacting with one surface of the glass. Preferred Features: The solution of gel covers the glass surface only in a thin layer or a film. The gel or solution is sprayed or painted onto the glass or the glass is immersed in a bath of the solution. Only a local surface region of the glass is contacted with the gel or solution. The solution or gel is applied onto a plastic film which is then contacted with the glass surface.
