The invention relates to a washer for purifying gases that contain particulate and/or gaseous contaminations, in which the gases are guided through an absorption column (10) onto which a washing liquid is sprayed. Additionally, a jet pump (7) operated with the washing liquid is provided which is disposed in the gas flow in series with the absorption column and generates a negative pressure in the gas flow. Preferably the jet pump is disposed in the gas flow upstream of the absorption column. The negative pressure generated in the gas flow by the jet pump should be high enough to compensate for the pressure loss in the absorption pump.
