When the engine is started a motor control unit (1) sends an Excitation inhibit signal (SGS) to the load distribution control unit (2). The motor control unit monitors the engine speed and also parameters (ambient and motor speed) which are factors influencing the instantaneous engine loading. When the engine is up to speed excitation continues to be blocked until a stable no-load speed has been reached which can be sustained and supply the excitation load.
