The method involves forming image data for displaying the state of a railway track system, forming monitoring image data in reference computers, comparing the image data and monitoring image data and only allowing safety-relevant operations if the data agree. If all reference computers fail a control station computer is changed to a higher safety standard safety mode in which at least one safety-relevant operation is allowed. The method involves forming image data enabling display of the state of a railway track system associated with the control mechanism from messages from the control mechanism in a control station computer, forming monitoring image data in reference computers, comparing the image data and monitoring image data and only allowing safety-relevant operations if the data agree. If all reference computers fail the control station computer is changed to a safety mode with a higher safety standard than normal mode and at least one of the safety-relevant operations is allowed even in safety mode.
