A method for operating a modular control system with a central or master unit (Z) and a number of connected peripheral components (Bn) using a process image (PA) deposited in the central unit to control installation processes. The process image is cyclically swapped between the central unit and the peripherals so that each is updated with the latest process image. An Independent claim is made for a modular control system with a central unit and peripherals with a cyclical exchange of the process image.
