The system uses two methods of guidance for safety whilst also allowing a degree of flexibility. The guidance system for urban public transport vehicles uses a coded optical marking system (16) on the surface of the carriageway. This is detected and analyzed by a unit mounted on the vehicle, in order to derive control signals for the vehicle indicating the direction and appropriate speed for the vehicle. There is also a pair of lateral edges (18, 20) situated on either side of the coded optical marking (16), defining a corridor for the passage of the vehicle (10), whose width corresponds to the maximum permitted lateral movement for the vehicle. Rollers supported by arms on the vehicle co-operate with these edges, enabling consequent mechanical control of the direction of the vehicle's steering.
