An input signal supplied to the signal input of the hearing aid or hearing protector in use is identified as a noise signal or a useful signal. This may take place shortly before, during or shortly after operation of the hearing aid or hearing protector. The identified signal is analyzed, and characteristic parameters are determined. An identified noise signal is reduced, and/or an identified useful signal is boosted. An Independent claim is included for a hearing aid and/or hearing protector.
