The precursor (6) comprises two or more raw foam materials. A primary foam (8) is first activated, expanding to fill parts of the cavity (4). A secondary foam (10) is then activated; its expansion being directed into remaining free spaces of the cavity. An Independent claim is included for the structural component so produced. The primary foam partially surrounds the secondary foam. Preferred features: The structural element and precursor (implying both raw foams) is activated by temperature treatment at T1, expanding the primary foam. They are then treated at temperature T2, expanding the second foam. T1 exceeds T2. The precursor is fastened to a support component before introduction into the cavity of the structural component. The precursor is fixed by screws, rivets, adhesives or clamping, into the cavity of the structural component. The structure includes many chambers. Expansion of primary- and/or secondary foams is effected through one or more openings between chambers. Cathodic dip painting takes place at a temperature providing one or more of the temperature treatments. In the structural component, primary- and secondary foams each contact its walls, providing mutual mechanical support. The structural component is assembled from at least two shells forming a cavity; these are joined by the adhesive effect of the foam.
