A gate valve comprises a closure member 9 having a peripheral groove 15 containing a resilient sealing member 16, the latter being integral with a sealing plate 17 covering the upper surface of the closure member. A pressure plate 20 bears on the sealing plate and is formed with a recess 21 for housing the nut 22 for spindle 8. Projections 24 on the closure member pass through holes in the sealing plate and pressure plate and are provided with shoulders 25 that engage a flange 26 on the nut. Once the valve reaches the closed position shown, continued rotation of the spindle causes the nut to act on surface 27 of the pressure plate thereby causing the latter to move downwardly to expand the sealing plate into contact with the wall 4 of the housing. As shown, the end faces 13, 14 of the closure member are covered by resilient material integral with the sealing member 16 and sealing plate 17. The resilient material, e.g. rubber, is vulcanized to the closure member. When the parts 9, 20, 22 are assembled, the pressure plate exerts a prestress on the sealing plate. |
