Process for thermally treating raw materials comprises charging an oven with the raw materials; and alternating introducing at least two gas phases having different oxygen contents into the oven. An Independent claim is also included for an oven for thermally treating raw materials comprising a chamber (6) having a charging opening (20) for the raw materials, and a device for alternately introducing the gas phases into the chamber. Preferred Features: The gas phases are alternately introduced under a pressure which is higher than the inner pressure of the oven. The gas phases are a mixture of an inert gas, preferably N2, CO2 and/or Ar, and oxygen.
