The present invention relates to an novel gene of Bifidobacteria encoding polypeptides involved in the adhesion of the bacteria to the mucosa and/or intestinal cells and host cells containing said gene. The present invention further pertains to a method of producing said polypeptide and a method of enhancing the adhesion of bacteria to the mucosa and/or intestinal cells.
